Safety Precautions During Mold Removal

Give SERVPRO a call if you notice mold growing in your home or business.

If your business is about to undergo mold remediation in Charlotte, NC you may be wondering how to protect your employees during the mold removal. With so many articles about black mold in the news, you may be concerned for their health. Bringing in experienced mold remediation professionals to handle the cleanup is the most important decision you can make to keep your workers safe. This is because an experienced team will be able to assess how extensive the mold growth is, how much of a threat it poses and what level of containment to implement during cleanup.

There are three levels of containment:

• Surface containment
• Local containment
• Full containment

How Is Mold Contained?

To prevent mold from spreading into the air and other areas during mold removal, a rigid frame is placed around the affected area and plastic sheeting is used to enclose it. A high-efficiency particulate air filter is set up so that air is pulled from the contained area, filtered and released, preferably outside the building. This cleans the air in the affected area and prevents it from spreading to rooms still in use by employees. In most cases, the plastic sheeting is laid down from the affected area to the exit to ensure mold isn’t tracked through the building by the removal team.

If the growth is extensive enough, a local containment may be set up, which includes the areas adjacent to those with visible growth. In some cases, a full containment may be necessary, which includes the entire building. If a full containment is required, you will need to close your business for the duration of the mold remediation procedure to ensure your employees’ safety.

Is Containment Always Necessary?

Believe it or not, containment is not always necessary. In cases where the affected area is less than 10 square feet in size, experienced mold removal experts in Charlotte, NC will usually not set up a containment area. They will, however, use respirators, gloves and protective eyewear while carrying out the remediation work. Be reassured, however, that if there is any danger to your employees, an expert will take the proper safety precautions to protect them.
